Semipolar and Nonpolar LEDs for General Lighting and Visible Light Communication

The objective of this research is to leverage the reduced carrier lifetimes due to increased (wavefunction overlap) in nonpolar and semipolar orientations of GaN to increase the efficiency and modulation bandwidth of blue (~430 nm) and green (~520 nm) LEDs. The target orientations for this project are nonpolar (10-10) and semipolar (20-2-1), which are expected to enable the shortest possible carrier lifetimes and speed along with high efficiency due to their large wave function overlaps.
